ZFF Masters


The ZFF MASTERS series offers a unique opportunity to experience renowned international filmmakers up-close, and gain insight into their work. The ZFF Masters sessions take place at the Filmpodium and are open to film enthusiasts and interested parties alike.

Ewan McGregor

Born 1971 in Scotland, Ewan McGregor achieved worldwide critical acclaim in 1996 when he played the emaciated heroin addict Renton in director Danny Boyle’s film TRAINSPOTTING. He landed the largest role of his career and set the international film community of fire when he signed on as Jedi Master Obi-Wan-Kenobi in STAR WARS: EPISODE I – THE PHANTOM MENACE (1999). His impressive acting career has seen him collaborate with such renowned directing greats as Ridley Scott for BLACK HAWK DOWN (2001) and Roman Polanski for THE GHOST WRITER (2010). In addition to his numerous other awards, McGregor has also received Golden Globe nominations for his roles in MOULIN ROUGE! (2001) and SALMON FISHING IN THE YEMEN (2011). This „ZFF Masters“ session sees Ewan McGregor talk about his acting career and his directorial debut AMERICAN PASTORAL.

Woody Harrelson

Whether in mainstream or independent film, Woody Harrelson’s charismatic acting talent has the power to impress both critics and viewers alike. Born in Texas in 1961, Harrelson first captured the world’s attention in the U.S. American sitcom CHEERS. He garnered his first Academy Award nomination for his role as Hustler founder Larry Flynt in Miloš Forman’s film THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT (1997). Harrelson’s unmistakeable acting style, such as can be seen in his role as the alcoholic mentor in the hit series THE HUNGER GAMES, or as the failing detective in the HBO series TRUE DETECTIVE (2014), remains deeply embedded in the minds of those who see him. Harrelson excels in his role as US President Johnson in the biopic LBJ, which screens as part of the ZFF’s “Gala Premieres” section.

Daniel Radcliffe

„Its fun to play a British bad-guy”, said Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe when talking about his performance alongside Michael Caine in the fantasy thriller NOW YOU SEE ME 2. Since completing the Harry Potter film series, Radcliffe has relished his artistic freedom. His successful appearances on Broadway and ambitious film and TV series projects pay homage to his versatile acting talent. This year, Radcliffe excels in not one, but two films at ZFF: in the crazy comedy adventure SWISS ARMY MAN and the undercover thriller IMPERIUM. Whether offering a deeper insight into his work as an actor or recounting animated anecdotes, this sympathetic Brit knows how to entertain an audience. His is going to be one scintillating „ZFF Masters“ session.

Olivier Assayas

Born 1955 in Paris, director and screenwriter Olivier Assayas seriously began making films at the age of 30, preferring before this to write about films for the influential French magazine „Cahiers du Cinema“. Assayas’ cinema is radically modern, vigorous, emotional, somewhat impenetrable and underscored by rock music soundtracks. Throughout his career, Assayas has collaborated with such acting stars as Maggie Cheung, Isabelle Huppert and Juliette Binoche. Set in the mountains of Grisons, his award-winning drama SILS MARIA (2014) was a huge hit with critics and audiences alike. His film PERSONAL SHOPPER garnered him the award for best director at Cannes this year. This eloquent contemporary’s „ZFF Masters“ session promises to be truly inspirational.
