Working at a remote polar weather station on an island in the Russian arctic, two very dissimilar men fulfil their monotonous everyday duties: recording weather data and sending it back to headquarters via radio. For moody meteorologist Sergei Gulybin, the job is nothing more than a routine. Trainee Pavel Danilov, however, is quite a bit younger than his co-worker and finds it much more difficult to adjust to the isolation of the island. When Pavel is told that Sergei’s family has been killed in an accident, he is afraid to break the news to his grumpy colleague. But the truth eventually comes out and the latent dislike between the two men escalates. Convinced that Sergei wants to take his life, Pavel makes a fatal decision.
