Beyto

by Gitta Gsell Focus Competition

Beyto is living life to the fullest: He is popular among his circle of friends, a motivated apprentice, and the rising star of a Bernese swimming club. But when the only son of Turkish immigrants falls in love with his coach Mike, his whole world collapses. Shocked and ashamed by Beyto's budding relationship with another man, his parents can see only one way to preserve the family’s honour: Beyto must marry. Under a pretext, they lure their son to their home village in Anatolia and force him to marry Seher, his childhood friend. The newlyweds return to Switzerland together and, unaware of what is happening to him, Beyto finds himself at the centre of an unbearable love triangle. BEYTO is a sensitive tale that tells the story of a young second-generation Turk who is in danger of either losing the support of his family or his own identity. A drama about tradition and integration that subtly expresses the dilemmas of its characters without losing sight of the beautiful side of life.
