by Alice Rohrwacher
Farm labourers working in the remote village of Inviolata are being exploited by greedy tobacco queen Marchesa de Luna. Living in the village is Lazzaro, a boy who is so intently happy-go-lucky that many consider him to be simple-minded. When Lazzaro is asked by his friend and nobleman's son Tancredi, to stage his own kidnapping, a miraculous journey through space and time begins, which leads him to the modern big city for the very first time... Director Alice Rohrwacher's third directorial work oscillates between fairy tale and political allegory. The film presents an unusual and wonderful cinematic experience which was awarded best screenplay in Cannes.
