Welcome to Leith

by Michael Beach Nichols, Christopher K. Walker Documentary Competition

How should you deal with democratic principles when they are used against you? When an old bearded man moves into the sleepy town of Leith in North Dakota, none of its approximately two-dozen residents can guess the danger posed by their new neighbor. The man is extreme right wing activist Craig Cobb. Cobb proceeds to purchase further plots of land in the area, and invites a dozen more followers of the White Supremacist movement to join him. His aim is to create a ‘purely white’ settlement. When more and more swastika flags start appearing in his front garden and Cobb begins patrolling the area with a loaded gun, the residents decide enough is enough. They want to be rid of the neo-Nazis, but how? And what rights do they have? WELCOME TO LEITH examines these questions from both sides of the fence and includes interviews with long-term residents, members of the recently arrived right-wing group and the authorities.
