by Alex Gibney
Four years ago, director Alex Gibney began work on a documentary about Lance Armstrong – it was to be the story of a great comeback. Notwithstanding the fervent accusations of doping by the French press, the then 38-year-old sportsman had his eye on his 8th win in the world’s most prestigious cycling race. Gibney was gobsmacked in 2012 when, shortly before the film was complete, Armstrong publicly confessed to doping. What began as the chronicle of a comeback, ended as an examination of the anatomy of a lie. Gibney spoke with the excluded sportsman on several occasions and talked to his former teammates and the infamous “Dottore Epo”, Michele Ferrari. THE ARMSTRONG LIE offers a profound insight into the double life of a fallen legend.
