On the Beach at Night Alone

Does he love her as much as she loves him? Will he follow her? These are the questions Korean star actress Younghee plaintively asks herself while strolling through a park in Hamburg. Not long ago, her affair with a famous and married director was made public. The resulting shit storm led her to a time out in Germany. Months later Younghee finds herself back in the Korean coastal town of Gangneung where she meets with old friends at rice-liquor fuelled dinner parties – and runs into her former lover. Director Hong Sangsoo’s mesmerisingly elegant film affectionately exposes the melancholy-drenched inner life of the main character Younghee. A complex part beautifully executed by lead actress Kim Minhee, a shooting star in the Korean film sky.
