Three years after the sudden death of war photographer Isabelle Reed, preparations are underway for an exhibition celebrating her life’s work. The event forces her son Jonah to return to the family home where his father, Gene, and younger brother, Conrad, still live. It soon becomes clear that nobody in the family has quite got over the death of Isabelle: while Conrad constantly avoids any form of contact by hiding beheadphoned behind his computer screen, Gene, who is finding it extremely difficult to tell his youngest son the possible reason for Isabelle’s death, attempts to console himself with a secret new love-affair. Starring Isabelle Huppert, Gabriel Byrne and Jesse Eisenberg, Joachim Trier’s brilliantly cast family drama skilfully plays with different narrative perspectives.
