Lily and her best friend Alison live on the banks of a polluted lake in the Californian desert. Lily is 15 years old and has had more than enough of living with her single alcoholic mother. She wants out of this dismal province, and she wants out now. A chance encounter with three layabout skaters triggers the two teenagers to put their long-standing plan of escape into action. Using a car ‘borrowed’ from Alison’s father, the two rebels make a break for LA, where they find their new acquaintances squatting in a former motel. Newly in love and ready for a big adventure, Lily is swept away by the dubious and dangerous plans of her friends, Alison, however, becomes increasingly aloof.
