“It is a curse in India to be on the bottom step of the social ladder, but it is just as difficult to be a woman.” The women of India are still battling with the patriarchal and corrupt structures of their society. Violence against women is widespread, and perpetrators often go unpunished. The North Indian Sampat Bal took things into her own hands and initiated the women’s rights movement ‘Gulabi Gang’. Together with numerous comrades-in-arms, readily recognizable by their pink saris, she travels from village to village to get to the bottom of unsolved crimes and to educate women about their rights. In GULABI GANG, we follow the charismatic feminist over the course of a year.
