Oren Little, a successful real estate agent, attaches minimal importance to his fellow human beings, and makes even less effort to appear sympathetic. Still struggling to cope with the death of his wife and the estrangement of his only son, Oren’s complacent life takes a dramatic turn when his son one day turns up on the doorstep and asks him to take custody of a nine-year-old granddaughter he never even knew he had. Overwhelmed by the situation, and in the hope that he can escape this responsibility, Oren turns to his neighbor Leah. Oren appears to have nothing whatsoever in common with the widow next door who, despite her age, is still trying to make it as a singer. However, the more time he spends with Leah and his granddaughter, the more his misanthropy erodes.
