by Wojciech Staron
The two brothers, Mieczyslaw and Alfons, both 90, shuffle their way forward arm in arm. They have a moving and sorrowful life behind them. With their family, they were deported as children from Poland to Siberia. They managed in 1944 to flee the Soviet labour camp. Mieczyslaw, the pragmatic one, became a cartographer, and Alfons a passionate and notable painter. The two now live together and help each other day by day. We accompany this duo of sympathetic codgers as they go about their daily lives. Director and cameraman Wojciech Staron accompanied the two dissimilar brothers through thick and thin over the period of several years. Winner of the ‘Semaine de la critique’ in Locarno.
