As a college freshman, Alex finds it difficult to make new friends. While his roommate and other students regularly try to outdo each other with alcohol excesses and hip aphorisms, Alex prefers to chat with his mother and sister on the phone. He eventually comes around to the idea of going to one of the legendary “Shithouse” parties and, once there, tries his best to mingle. Although Alex doesn’t really warm to the party crowd and the women’s courtship behaviour leaves him cold, the evening nevertheless turns into an unexpectedly long and beautiful night, which he spends with the equally sensitive Maggie. When the next day Maggie acts aloof and gives him the cold shoulder, Alex no longer understands the world.
