China during the Cultural Revolution: a man escapes from a labour camp just to watch the newsreel in a village cinema – his missing daughter is, after all, supposed to appear in this very newsreel. Once there, however, he witnesses how the film reel is stolen by a strange vagabond shortly before the screening. He manages to get the reel back after a trial of strength, but not without damaging the film in the process. His last hope is the kind-hearted projectionist "Movie Fan", who, with the help of the villagers, tries to save the maltreated celluloid strips. In the spirit of CINEMA PARADISO, Chinese master director Yimou Zhang’s heartfelt and fine humoured ONE SECOND is a homage to the power of film and a beautiful declaration of love to the magic of analogue cinema!
