Having left their families behind in Burkina Faso, Ayiva and Abas are on their way to Europe to start a new and better life. The two survive the treacherous crossing made with a group of refugees in a smuggler’s boat. Having arrived in southern Italy they soon begin earning money working on an orange plantation. But the hostility towards foreigners found in their new environment takes on ever-increasing seriousness. Driven by the need to support their families back home and unsettled by the social rejection they are experiencing in Italy, Ayiva and Abas must now decide – each for himselve – how far they are prepared to go to find happiness in Europe. MEDITERRANEA is a disturbing and highly topical social drama that gives a small notion of how refugees cope once they get to the other side of the ocean.
