The Côte d'Azur in the 1920s: From jazz clubs to country houses and fashion events, this is where the haute-volée enjoys the sweet life. It comes as no surprise that it is also the hangout for a number of imposters. Conspicuous among them is the supposed fortune teller Sophie Baker, whose prophecies loosen the pockets of the rich and beautiful. The famous illusionist Stanley Crawford is summoned from London to the South of France to put an end to her handiwork. “She will not fool me”, declares the British gentleman triumphantly. But as the two get to know each other, Stanley gradually begins to doubt whether Sophie is a fraud at all – or has the charming American simply robbed him of his senses? Director Woody Allen continues his cinematic trip through Europe and stops off in roaring-twenties France.
