On a country road in the middle of a sugar cane plantation, a truck is approaching. Protecting himself from a cloud of whirling dust, Alfonso is covering his face with his hat. Years ago he has left his farm, his wife, and his son Gerardo. Ever since, the threat of fire and ash have dominated the landscape. Now that his son is struggling with a lung disease, Alfonso returns to his old house. All that he desires is to become part of the family again and to rescue them from the precarious situation. Between the lines, however, it becomes clear that there is no future in here. LA TIERRA Y LA SOMBRA is a subtly narrated family drama brought about by spellbindingly beautiful camera work and lovable characters.
