Fed up with nothing but funerals and illness, and much to the dismay of his wife, the 70-year-old travel writer Bill Bryson wants to know what it’s like to hike the spectacular 2000 kilometre-long Appalachian Trail. His search for a travel companion is fruitless, until, completely out of the blue, his former childhood buddy Stephen Katz gets in touch. The venture is a bit of a gamble for an overweight recovering alcoholic (with a bottle of whiskey in his backpack). Nevertheless, the dissimilar duo set off on their adventure. With a subtle sense of humour and a pinch of self-irony, A WALK IN THE WOODS tells the tale of two aging men who give each other the strength they need to carry on.
