“Isn’t it wrong to lie?” – “It’s a good lie.” While the whole family knows that their lively grandmother Nai-Nai only has a few weeks left to live, nobody dares to tell her that she has been diagnosed with cancer. New York-based granddaughter Billi, who herself is currently keeping the secret of having failed to get a Guggenheim scholarship, travels to her homeland in China, where the entire extended family is gathering. Set up to be an “undercover” farewell party, the family has decided it would be too painful for Nai-Nai to be made aware of her fate. Inspired by her own family history, director Lulu Wang recounts the quest for one's own roots and the unwavering solidarity of a Chinese extended family with sweet melancholy and subtle humour and lets CRAZY RICH ASIANS-star Awkwafina shine once again.
