Transylvania in winter: After throwing in the towel at a German butcher shop, Matthias returns to his snowy home village shortly before Christmas. He finally wants to take care of his son Rudi again. He also longs to see his on-off lover, Csilla, who runs the local bakery. However, when Csilla hires several foreign workers to help her, xenophobic protests erupt in the village, and Matthias witnesses unexpected conflicts break out among the seemingly well-behaved residents. In this razor-sharp cinematic MRI of a Romanian village, Romanian master director Cristian Mungiu shines a spotlight on the globalisation losers in Eastern Europe.
