by Mario Martone
After 40 years away, Felice returns to his hometown of Naples to visit his mother. His life as a successful entrepreneur in Cairo has distanced him from his past, but as he strolls through the alleys of the Sanità district, he is haunted by memories. Felice's childhood friend Oreste, with whom he was once involved in petty criminal activities, is now a feared mafia godfather. Although Felice is warned off several times, he continues to seek contact with his former best friend. Director Mario Martone captivates with a dual character study: Of a returning expatriate and of the city of Naples, which he shows from both its sunny and shadowy side. Based on the novel by Ermanno Rea, the film NOSTALGIA is an enthralling, atmospheric thriller that plays with past and present.
