Valle Verzasca in the 19th century: Giorgio's mother has broken her foot. As the family has no money to pay the doctor, they have no other choice but to hire out little Giorgio as a child laborer to the dubious Luini, a fate Giorgio shared with many other boys from Ticino. He ends up in Milano where he is forced to climb through dark chimney stacks, removing soot with his bare hands. Giorgio, however, decides to become the maker of his own future and joins forces with other chimney sweeps to found the Union of the Black Brothers. Together they fight their misery and dare to escape back home. This is the highly anticipated literary adaptation of the famous children's book by Lisa Tetzner and Kurt Held.
