In 18th century France, Grenouille has been obsessed with smells since childhood. He takes up an apprenticeship with perfumer, Baldini, and soon exhibits a talent for scents. When he catches the scent of a plum seller, he becomes completely fascinated. While trying to restrain her, he kills her – and her scent dies. Grenouille then becomes obsessed with the idea of creating the perfect perfume – and more women are found dead on the streets of Paris.
