Breaking a Monster

Performing under the name ‘Unlocking the Truth’, the three African American teenagers Malcolm, Alec and Jarad appeared in New York’s Times Square in June 2013. But metal, not rap, is their passion. A video of their performance became a YouTube sensation. The 13-year-olds were immediately spotted and henceforth managed by industry veteran Alan Sacks. Sacks got the band in the line-up at the biggest festivals and won them a major record deal with Sony. But the lack of respect for the mechanisms of the music business shown by the teenagers makes life tough for their manager. Will they ever record an album? BREAKING A MONSTER follows the youths over a period of one year as their metal band teeters on the verge of a breakthrough and documents the dynamic relationship between the trio of music lovers and their charismatic and equally ambitious manager.
