As a teenager, Aidan Bloom dreamed of saving the planet as a science-fiction superhero. Now aged thirty-five, this rather unsuccessful actor can barely keep his own family above water. All the same, thanks to the support of his father Gabe, Aidan is able to send his children, Grace and Tucker, to their Jewish community’s expensive private school. However, when Gabe develops cancer and is no longer able to cover his grandchildren’s school fees, Aidan is particularly hard hit. Out of desperation, he decides to teach his children himself – an apparent recipe for familial disaster. It soon becomes clear, however, that Aidan and his children can learn a heck of a lot more from each other than what’s on the curriculum.
