Since the death of his parents, teenager Enoch has lost all touch with reality. He spends his time with his one and only friend Hiroshi, the ghost of a fallen Second World War kamikaze pilot. To satisfy his fascination with death, he attends the funerals of total strangers. Only by meeting a very special girl, the fun-loving Annabel, does he start to find a new zest for life. She too is a misfit, but one suffering from a life-threatening illness, who finds Charles Darwin more interesting than hanging around with her friends. When Enoch discovers how ill Annabel actually is, he selflessly offers to accompany her on her journey. The two are bound together by their shared feeling of experiencing the world ‘differently’.
