Hockey was not only a sport in the Soviet Union. During the Cold War, the dominating Soviet ice hockey team ‘Sbornaja’, with its filigree, team-orientated way of playing, was considered proof of the superiority of the Soviet system. Slava Fetisov who, as captain in the 1980s, led ‘Sbornaja’ to two Olympic gold-medal wins, and many other members of arguably the best hockey team of all time, recount their stories in RED ARMY. Through extensive archive footage we experience how the cold war played out, both on and off the ice. RED ARMY traces the last years of a sports team and simultaneously portrays the collapse of a political system.
