by Maya Goded
The area around the ‘Plaza de la Soledad’ in Mexico City is the hotspot district of La Merced, known for its prostitution and high levels of crime. Renowned photographer and neo filmmaker Maya Goded accompanied four women from this milieu over a period of many years. Despite all four of them overflowing with the energy and pride of youth, they can not escape the dark side of their past. Each of the women is a victim of violence and the absence of love. As they got older, the female companions have learned how to give each other the strength to continue. Premiered at the renowned Sundance Film Festival, this film is the masterful portrait of extraordinary people and a powerful case for female autonomy.
