A permanent home, warm meals and school friends is all 15-year-old Charley wishes for. This simple request, however, is not an easy wish to grant when your single father keeps moving from one place to another. When the logistics worker and his son have moved to Portland in the hope of making a new start, fate strikes a sudden blow and Charley finds himself alone. He takes emergency shelter on the ranch of has-been horse trainer Del Montgomery and his horse-racing wife, Bonny – and through taking care of the horses, discovers a new zest for life. Charley is particularly fond of stallion Pete; when the horse is headed for the butchers, Charley hatches a plan… Director Andrew Heigh’s fourth feature film is based on the eponymous youth novel by Willy Vlautin.
