Canada during the 1960s. Youth culture and women’s lib have not yet made it to the furthest reaches of Québec, where mother superior Augustine runs a small convent school with great fervour. Here, the nuns’ hearts beat for music. Over the years, the convent has become a renowned centre of education where young musicians are trained. But the convent school’s holy world is becoming increasingly unstable. On the one hand, the highly talented but rebellious new girl Alice keeps Augustine on her toes. On the other hand, the progressive nunnery has to battle with its ultra conservative sponsor – the Vatican. And finally, the state of Canada is calling for the secularisation of schools.
