England, 1975. Following a divorce and looking forward to a fresh start, 30-year-old Dr. Robert Laing moves into an extraordinary building: the forty floors of this glamorous tower block are clearly divided. The upper class – which includes Anthony Royal, the tower’s celebrated architect – has reserved the top floors for itself. Laing lives in the middle part of the tower. He soon befriends the ‘common’ journalist Wilder, who occupies a flat on a lower floor. But all is not well behind the shiny façade of this building: the residents are plagued by mysterious sleep disorders and constant technical faults. It’s not long before increasing tensions between the upper and lower floors turn into open violence, and Laing must decide on which side – up or down – he belongs.
