In a Hong Kong apartment, a young man is playing the cello; meanwhile, a policeman is having intercourse with a prostitute, and a severed head lands on the floor. This extraordinary mystery puzzle of a film, however, revolves around the cop’s beautiful daughter Yu Ting, who has an affair with her teacher and is ensnared by her cello-playing school friend and an autistic teenager. G AFFAIRS is a beguiling cinematic collage in a typically unabashed Hong Kong style, which tells of the pressure to perform, bullying, sexual discrimination and the lack of family stability, thus bringing the city’s failings to the fore. Celebrated in Hong Kong, director Lee Pan Cheuk’s debut film was created as part of the city’s “First Feature Film Initiative”.
