For most people, work is the basis of their existence. Without it, life soon becomes about survival. CHAEBOLS UND CHABOLAS takes us on a trip with the former Swiss State Secretary of Economic Affairs David Syz. We accompany him to Spain where we visit illegal immigrants who sit trapped in their huts built from refuse after unemployed Spaniards drove them away from their routine work in the local greenhouses. We journey to South Korea where we meet a society for which performance is all-important. Those unable to find work at one of the large conglomerates are also out of the social door. What is the cost of our prosperity? Filmmaker Christian Neu shows us how different cultures deal with unemployment – and what they can learn from each other.
