May 1945: After the surrender of Nazi Germany, Heinrich Zwygart, Swiss ambassador in Berlin, is ordered back home. Arriving in Switzerland, he is delighted to be reunited with his wife Clara and daughter Hélène. At the same time, he forges ahead with his political career with great ambition: The busy diplomat is aiming for nothing less than a seat on the Federal Council. But as Zwygart tries to launch his candidacy in the post-war turmoil, he gets caught up in past decisions. Inspired by Thomas Hürlimann's stage play "Der Gesandte", Geneva director Laurent Nègre uses a family drama to highlight Switzerland's role in World War II. Lead actor Michael Neuenschwander shines as the torn ambassador.
