LION a Swiss Cinema Hit

30. March 2017

After opening the 12th ZFF Last autumn, LION, the story of an Indian orphan named Saroo, has now won the hearts of Swiss cinemagoers.

The film is based on the true story of Indian-born Saroo Brierley, who was separated from his family at the age of 5 when he accidentally got on the wrong train. On finding his family again in 2012, Brierley published the autobiographical book "A Long Way Home". Known for directing several episodes of the series TOP OF THE LAKE, Australian director Garth Davis took the book as the basis for his first feature film. The moving biopic was produced by American film industry legend Harvey Weinstein and stars Rooney Mara, Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman in the lead roles.
LION premiered at Toronto International Film Festival in 2016 and celebrated its European premiere when it opened the 12th Zurich Film Festival in 2017. Nominated for 6 Academy Awards, it has since become the audience favorite at numerous international festivals. LION hit Swiss cinemas in mid-February 2017 and has attracted more than 100'000 cinema viewers to date.
LION's production team, which was in Zurich with Harvey Weinstein and Ian Canning, are currently working on director Garth Davis and lead actress Rooney Mara’s follow-up MARY MAGDALEN, a filmic portrait of the eponymous biblical figure, which will hit cinemas in autumn 2018.
