Midwives

by Snow Hnin Ei Hlaing Border Lines

In conflict-torn Myanmar, Muslims are systematically persecuted and deprived of their basic rights. Despite the strict ethnic divisions, Hla, a Buddhist midwife trains Nyo Nyo, a Muslim woman to become a midwife too. Regardless of their ethnic background, the two women provide medical services to all those who seek help in a makeshift clinic. Filmmaker Hnin Ei Hlaing accompanied the protagonists for over five years and gained unique access. She tells with immediacy of the courage of two women who rebel against oppression and bridge differences.
