by Yann Demange Feature Film Competition

Belfast, 1971: A young man runs for his life. Gary Hook, soldier of the British Army, was deployed to the capital of Northern Ireland. By the time he arrives, the conflict in Northern Ireland has reached its zenith and civil war has broken out. The city is divided into loyal Protestant and hostile Catholic areas. When Garry and his troop arrive on the streets of Belfast, the situation spirals out of control. During clashes with fanatical civilians, the soldier suddenly loses contact with his comrades and is left to make his own retreat. On his way back to base, Gary loses all sense of orientation – not knowing who is friend and who is foe – and has only the help of the residents to rely upon. Director Yann Demange throws his protagonists into the madness of civil war and exposes the senselessness of a battle where every act of violence is met by a fresh act of violence.
