Gruber geht

by Marie Kreutzer Focus Competition

Gruber – a good-looking, professionally successful, Porsche driving ladies’ man – lives his life exactly the way he wants to. He can be charming if he needs something, or a complete and ignorant asshole if he finds it necessary. And he often finds it necessary. An acute pain in his lower abdomen puts the brakes on his decadent lifestyle, however, and a trip to the hospital ends with a cancer diagnosis. But how does a friendless egocentric deal with such a discovery? Gruber’s usual cynicism doesn’t numb the situation for long. A ray of light appears in the form of Sarah from Berlin. The two are not exactly a match made in heaven, but Sarah manages to find some common ground. It is no great wonder that even such a polished block of wood as Gruber has a soft centre hiding somewhere – but where? Marie Kreutzer’s hilarious yet cutting character study is based on the book of the same name by Doris Knecht.
