Rocks

by Sarah Gavron International Feature Film / Competition

Rocks is a bundle of energy. The teenage Londoner really gets going when she’s together with her friends. Whether it is chatting, rapping or dancing, the colourful troupe of girls are drowning out their desperate teachers with ease. Back at home in her modest prefab apartment, Rocks is faced with some sobering news: her mother has run off again, and all she’s left behind is a sticky note, some money, and her little brother Emmanuel. Rocks and her brother are left to brachiate on their own. On the run from the youth welfare office, the two find shelter with the girls, but as the days get longer, the money gets scarcer and Rock’s pride gets fiercer... Using cool rhythms and authentic actresses, director Sarah Gavron shows us the true strength of friendships and creates a lively, humorous work about the resilience found in the English lower classes.
