Dachra

by Abdelhamid Bouchnak New World View: Tunisia

The budding journalist Yassmin decides to join forces with two fellow students to investigate the legend of the witch Mongia for a university project. Their research leads the three to an isolated community in the deep forest. Warmly welcomed by the male inhabitants, but shunned by the women, Yassmin suspects no good will come of their visit and is soon running for her life. Director Abdelhamid Bouchnak's "first horror film of Tunisia", has been realised with the most meagre of means and offers a cleverly implemented low-budget aesthetic. It became not only a celebrated festival success, but also the biggest Tunisian box office hit in 20 years.
