Kinshasa Makambo

by Dieudo Hamadi Border Lines

"Kabila, we warn you!" young men and women are singing on the streets of Kinshasa. Joseph Kabila has unconstitutionally ruled as President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo beyond his official time in office. As the President’s demanded resignation on December 20, 2016 approaches, the atmosphere is becoming increasingly claustrophobic. Christian, who has joined an activist group, Ben, who has returned from exile, and Jean-Marie, who has already been to prison for his protest speeches, are among those fighting for their rights. A handheld camera accompanies the three protagonists as they are in protest on the streets, and follows them along secret meetings with other activists. Director Dieudo Hamadi offers a ruthless insight into a conflict that is still very much going on in his homeland today.
