Germany in the 1960s: after fleeing to the FRG, young artist Kurt Barnert finds himself unable to forget his traumatic childhood and teenage experiences under Nazi and Eastern German regimes. Only after finding the love of his life, Ellie, he begins to be able to create unique images. Through these images, Kurt is able to process his own past while simultaneously reflecting on the historical trauma of a whole generation. His fortune in art and in love is put increasingly to the test by his difficult relationship with his future father-in-law, who himself carries a dark secret within him. Inspired by the life story of Gerhard Richter, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s historical thriller WERK OHNE AUTOR takes us on a journey through three epochs of German history.
