Call Me by Your Name

by Luca Guadagnino Gala Premieres

When American student Oliver arrives at the Perlman’s family estate, 17-year-old Elio offers up his bed and moves into the adjoining closet. During the sun-soaked Italian summer of 1983, Elio soon discovers that it is not just his sleeping quarters that have been subject to change. The nonchalant and eloquent art historian Oliver, who is staying for several weeks to assist Elio’s father with his studies, has the lanky teenager under his spell from the off. Bike rides, days spent swimming together and evenings around the family table soon force the two to realise that they are bound by something special – something unaccepted by society. Rich in detail and with extraordinary empathy for his characters, director Luca Guadagnino has created a bittersweet cinema masterpiece with a long-lasting after-effect.
