Zoology / Zoologiya

by Ivan I. Tverdovsky International Feature Film / Competition

Natascha is responsible for feeding the animals at a zoo in a southern Russian town. The single fiftysomething, who still lives with her mother, has a much better relationship with the animals than her work colleagues. Colleagues, who take joy in playing tricks on Natascha. She is stuck and it seems that life has no surprises for her until one day she comes to the realisation that… she is growing a tail! While having an x-ray done, Natascha meets radiologist Pyotr, a young man whose interest brings out the best in her. Meanwhile, rumours of a woman who has been possessed by the devil are spreading around town unsettling the locals – not least Natascha’s pious mother…
Director Ivan I. Tverdovsky masterfully tells a realistically structured tale studded with elements of fantasy – an innovative filmic approach towards fear, loneliness and being different intertwined in a biting commentary on present-day Russian society.
