by Benjamin Ree Documentary Competition

At 22 years of age, the exceptionally talented Norwegian chess player Magnus Carlsen achieved his goal in Madras in 2013 by beating India’s national hero Visvanathan Anand in a well-led world championship battle. Ever since having been introduced to the game at a young age, Carlsen – also known as the ‘Mozart of chess’ – has outperformed his more experienced opponents. With his exceptional creativity and confident decision-making abilities, Carlsen was well placed, even at the age of 13, to make grandmasters look past their best. Currently, he has achieved the status of a celebrity – Time Magazine lists him as one of the most influential people in the world. Behind the often misleadingly arrogant exterior lies an ambitious yet sensitive young man, who remains truest to himself when in the company of his family. Director Benjamin Ree uses a comprehensive pool of archive material and home videos to offer us an insight into the maturation of a genius.
