Son of Saul / Saul Fia

by László Nemes New World View Hungary

Saul is part of a special unit at the concentration camp in Auschwitz. He is one of the prisoners forced to operate the gas chambers and burn bodies. He has an impossible idea when one day he believes to have recognised his son among the dead: he wishes to find a Rabbi who will pray the Kaddish and offer his son a decent burial. László Nemes’ harrowing, Academy Award-, Cannes jury prize- and countless other awards-winning debut feature takes us on a journey through what can only be described as hell. Under abominable circumstances there remains the faint hope and the possibility of maintaining just a spark of human dignity. Turning the debate on the representation of the Holocaust upside down, this is a unique film which earned its rightful place amongst the canon of the best movies of the decade.
