Deepwater Horizon
The offshore drilling rig Deepwater Horizon is on the verge of a pioneering milestone in the year 2010: more than 100 million barrels of oil are to be extracted from the Gulf of Mexico. But the two chief engineers Mike Williams and Jimmy Harrell, both charged with overseeing the project, soon realise that too much pressure on the borehole could jeopardise the whole venture – a warning ignored by the oil company involved. The disastrous blowout – an uncontrolled release of gas and oil – that follows leads to an environmental disaster of epic proportions. Millions of tons of oil pour into the ocean while 120 workers are trapped on the burning platform. An explosive race against time ensues when Williams and his team put their own lives at risk to evacuate the injured and rescue survivors.
