Drifter

by Gábor Hörcher New World View Hungary

„When the end comes, I want to die in a car.“ With skill and at breakneck speed, the 18-year-old Ricsi races his old, pepped-up BMW through the pot-holed streets of a Hungarian province. The rebel is prepared to sacrifice everything, including his clean record, the support of his concerned parents and his education in order to become a rally driver, leaving poverty behind. Filmmaker Gábor Hörcher followed Ricsi and his family over a period of five years to create a deeply fascinating and beautifully photographed longitudinal study of a young man who simply fails to get his act together. The atmospheric film offers us a deep insight into a harsh Hungarian country lifestyle that is characterised by melancholy and decay.
