Gennadyi has moved to Moscow from Magadan in the Far East. There Gena performs in public as the drag queen Gena Marvyn to demonstrate for artistic freedom and against the oppression of the LGBTQ+ community. Gena is repeatedly attacked and finally arrested. This documentary film not only shows the activism of its charismatic protagonist, but also follows Gena to his far-off provincial home and highlights the difficult relationship Gennadyi has with his grandparents. With this documentary film, director Agniia Galdanova gives us an insight into the harsh climate of Putin's Russia, which lacks any tolerance for artists and freedom-loving people who don't conform to the government's ideal.
