Born in the body of a man, Chelsea Manning served under the name of Bradley as an IT specialist in the US Army in Iraq, before being arrested and sentenced to 35 years in prison following the transmission of military secrets to Wikileaks. The documentary portrait XY CHELSEA begins when the whistle-blower and transgender woman is released from an all-male prison following the pardon of President Obama. For more than two years, Welsh filmmaker Tim Travers Hawkins has accompanied the intrepid and sensitive activist to create this character study of a fascinating and fierce woman who has to deal with the consequences of her past, her involuntary celebrity status, her physical transformation as well as the completely altered political climate under President Trump.
